Great DVD celebrating the 60th anniversary of Canned Heat, with multiple never before seen live performances throughout the years.
Many years after the release of the excellent "Canned Heat Story" and the underrated "On the Road Again" on DVD, the time has finally come for "THE CANNED HEAT ANTHOLOGY" covering the years 1968–2024. While it’s a pity that "Rollin’ and Tumblin’" from the Monterey Pop Festival—the song where it all began—is missing, the rest of the collection offers a fantastic overview of the band’s history and the various musicians who have been part of it. Naturally, the first section features the wonderful songs with classic lineup: Wilson, Hite, de la Parra, Taylor, and Vestin/Mandel. It’s a shame that I already owned all the songs from this part of the DVD, but such is the fate of collectors—we usually have everything there is to have. Further on, there are unique recordings from the TV show "Midnight Special" and the "Tribal Stomp '78" festival—an event that, in its own right, deserves a standalone release. The series of performances featuring Bob Hite concludes with a segment from a magnificent concert with John Lee Hooker, recorded on December 24, 1980; it’s a real gem. Following this, we move on to clips featuring Ronnie Baron—a star in his own right—who began collaborating with the band back when their leader, Bob Hite, was still alive. Ronnie was a star in his own right, as is clearly evident—both in sight and sound—throughout this DVD.
Other notable names appearing on the latest DVD include James Thornberry, Junior Watson, Robert Lucas, Becky Barksdale, Barry Levenson, and John Paulus. Finally, it is excellent that the track "One Last Boogie" was included, performed by the current lineup: Fito de la Parra, Dale Spalding, Rick Reed, and Jimmy Vivino. When I first heard this song a few years ago during a concert in Dresden, I thought it was a track worthy of Canned Heat’s best years.
I recommend it. This DVD is a must-have for every fan of the band.
Oczywiście pierwsza część zawiera klasyczny line-up, Wilson, Hite, de la Parra, Taylor i Vestin / Mandel.
